バレンタインデー イベント

2月14日放課後、HELLO Villageにおいてバレンタインイベントが開催されました。このイベントではまずALTが世界各地ではバレンタインがどのように祝われているのかを説明してくれました。例えば、アメリカでは男女が性別に関係なくチョコレートや花などを相手に贈り、そのためホワイトデイはないとのことでした。その後、生徒たちはグループに分かれて，オリジナルのラブストーリーを創作することになりました。そして生徒たちはイベントの最後に創作したストーリーを劇として披露しました。生徒たちは、プールサイドや空港などの与えられたシチュエーションを使って劇を披露し楽しいひと時を過ごしました。

On Feb. 14th, we had Valentine’s Day Event at HELLO Village. In this event, ALTs first explained about how people around the world celebrate Valentine’s Day. For example, in US, both men and women give presents such as chocolates and flowers to people they love (including their family members and friends). This is the reason why they do not have a counterpart event of White Day we have in Japan. After the presentation, students were asked to create an original love story with their group members using a set situation like by the poolside and at the airport. Then, they enjoyed and laughed a lot performing their play.

HELLOVillage Open Event: Journey Through Time

　1月２７日（土）、今年１回目の一般市民向けイベント「Journey Through Time」がHELLO Villageで開催されました。様々な世代から20人ほどの方々が集まり、ALTの導きで楽しく英語を学びながら、過去と未来について語り合いました。このイベントではまず初めに参加者同士で自己紹介を行い、自分の趣味や京都で好きな場所などについて話しました。次に、音楽、車、服装、電化製品などに関して、過去から現在に至る間に起こった変化をALTたちが紹介してくれました。その後、参加者同士で「In the good old days...」や「Back in my day..」といった英語表現を使いながら、身近に起こった変化に関して思い出を共有しました。そして、10分ほど歓談しながら休憩取った後は、最後のアクティビティとして、食べ物、科学技術、教育、生活スタイルなどに関して、自分たちが思い描く未来を、参加者同士で助けないながら一枚の大きな紙にまとめました。
　HELLO Villageの一般市民イベントは職業、年齢、国籍などの異なる様々なバックグラウンドを持った人々が集まり、国際的な文化体験を通じて、お互いを知り、自分を見つめなおす機会を得ることができます。今回参加いただいた多くの方々から「色々な人とお話しすることができてよかった」という感想をいただき、HELLO Villageが地域において果たすべき役割の一つを、数年ぶりではありますが、再び果たすことができたのではないかと感じております。次回の一般市民向けイベントは現在のところ未定ですが、日程が決まりましたら、また日吉ケ丘高校HPからご案内をさせていただきます。今回は寒い中お越しいただき、ありがとうございました。

　The first open event this year ‘Journey Through Time’ was held at HELLO Village on Jan. 27th. About 20 people of all ages joined this event and shared their past memories, present experiences, and some ideas about the future. In this event, they first introduced themselves and talked about their pastimes and favorite places in Kyoto. Second, our ALTs made presentations about changes through time in terms of various things (games, music, cars, and electric appliances, and so on). After that, using the English expressions such as ‘In the good old days...’ and ‘Back in my day...’ , the attendees shared such changes through time with other participants. After the 10-minute break, as the final activity, they expressed, on a big sheet of paper, what future they want to have, concerning food, technology, education, lifestyle, and etc.
　In our open event, people with different backgrounds get together and have an opportunity to know each other and reflect on themselves. We are glad to hear from the participants that they enjoyed talking with people of different ages, and feel that we finally restarted our role in our community after the almost four-year hiatus due to the COVID-19. While the second open event is not decided yet, the details will be informed on our Website as the date gets closer. Thank you for coming, and see you next time!

Pub Quiz at HELLO Village

　1月17日（水）、毎年恒例となっている3学期の「Pub Quiz」がHELLO Villageで開催されました。放課後、英語村に集まった生徒たちは4 チームに分かれ、ALTから出題される様々なクイズにチームメイトと協力して挑み、楽しく英語を学ぶ時を過ごしました。
　今回出題された問題は、碁盤の目のように並んだ文字から意味のある言葉（食べ物）を探し出す「Word Search」、与えられた情報にマッチする国を探し出す「Match the Facts」、他のチームの解答を予測して同じ解答を導き出す「Common Answer」、他のチームとは異なる唯一の解答を導き出す「One of a Kind」、洋楽のPVを見てその曲に関する問題に答える「Music Video」でした。
　正解するたびに拍手が沸き起こり、生徒たちはチームメイトと喜び合っていました。今回も熾烈なトップ争いの結果、１位に輝いたのはチーム「Egg」。２位は「Beautiful Girls」、３位は「Cheese」でした。HELLO Villageではこの後も2月にバレンタインイベントが開催予定です。

　On Jan. 17th, we had an after-school event ‘Pub Quiz’ at HELLO Village. 4 student-teams joined this event and enjoyed the quiz challenge from our ALTs, Anastasiia and Dewald!
　The students worked together with other team-members for solving the following quizzes: ‘Word Search’ (finding meaningful words (Food) from letters arranged in a grid-like way), ‘Match the Facts’ (Find the right combinations of facts and countries of which the facts are true), ‘Common Answers’ (guessing the same answer shared by other teams), ‘One of a Kind’ (guessing the unique answer not shared by other teams) and ‘Music Video’ (Watching a music video and answering the questions about it).
　Every time the answer was announced, students shared their joy with team-mates. This time, the winner was the Team ‘Egg’, followed by the second-place ‘Beautiful Girls’, and the third-place ‘Cheese’. We are also planning to have the Valentine Event next month.

HELLO Village市民向けイベント再開のお知らせ！ 2024年市民向けイベント第1弾「Journey Through Time」

　おかげさまでHELLO Village（英語村）も８年目を迎えて、これまで以上に充実した取組みを進めています。今年度も多くの生徒たちがランチタイムや放課後、そしてイベントが行われるごとにHELLO Villageを訪れています。彼らはALTや留学生たちとの英語でのコミュニケーションを通じて、世界をつなぐ「越境者」としての力を着実に培っています。HELLO Village では開村当初から地域のみなさまにも同様の様々な文化的な体験をしていただきたいと考え、英語で行われる一般市民イベントを開催しておりました。コロナ禍での数年間の中断を経て、今年1月に再開する運びとなりました！
　2024年第1弾の「英語村」市民向けイベントは、ALTの導きで参加者同士が過去と未来について話し合う「Journey Through Time」です。過去に思いを馳せ、昔のよかったところや悪かったところ、今の良いところや悪いところ、また昔から大きく変わったところや今も変わらずにあるものなどについて話し合いながら、過去を振り返って得られたことを他の参加者と共有し、明日への教訓を導き出してみませんか？　ALTやボランティアスタッフが優しくサポートしてくれますので英語が苦手な方も是非ご参加ください。以下に過去の一般市民イベントの様子も掲載しておりますので、ご覧ください。

Christmas Event at HELLO Village

　12月19日（火）の放課後、英語村においてクリスマスイベントが開催されました。生徒たちは様々なアクティビティに参加して、冬休み前の放課後を楽しんでいました。
　まずは最初のアクティビティとして、生徒たちはワードサーチでクリスマスに関連する言葉を探したり、紙で雪の結晶を作って、英語村をデコレーションしたりしました。緻密なものから、興味深いものまで、生徒の性格が現れた個性的な雪の結晶がたくさん生まれました。次にALTたちが出身地でクリスマスがどのように祝われているのかを説明してくれました。とりわけ、アメリカやカナダなどで行われている「醜いセーター」を着るという風習について、スライドを使って教えてくれました。その後は実際に「醜いセーター」コンテストが英語村で開催され、生徒たちは世界で最も醜いセーターを目指して紙で思い思いの「何か」を生み出しました。そして最後はお待ちかねのプレゼントタイム。生徒たちは欲しかったものをもらって喜んだり、予想外のものをもらって驚いたりしていました。
　英語村としてはこれが今年最後のイベントとなりますが、来年１月にはすぐに新年１回目のイベントであるPub Quizが開催されます。これからも英語村では実りある様々な体験を提供していきたいと思っております。

　On Dec. 19th, there was the Christmas Event at HELLO Village. Students joined the event and enjoyed a feeling of excitement before the winter vacation.
　First, students did ‘Word Search’ (finding Christmas-related words from letters arranged in a grid-like way) and made paper-snow crystals in order to decorate HELLO Village. All of the crystals are quite original, reflecting the personalities of the creators. Second, ALTs gave a talk about how Christmas is celebrated in their countries. Especially, they talked about the ugly sweater tradition in US and Canada and actually held the Ugliest Sweater Contest in which students tried to make a paper-sweater as ugly as possible in the world. Finally, the time for Christmas gifts. Some students got excited because they got what they wanted, and others got surprised because they got something unexpected.
　This is the last event this year, but we will soon have the first event ‘Pub Quiz’ in January next year. We are going to offer fruitful experiences here at HELLO Village.

HELLO Village Week II Day5 Part 2

　HELLO Village Week II の最終日放課後はクリスカップスピーチコンテストが行われ、１年生９名、２年生９名，留学生３名が参加し、英語（留学生は日本語）のスピーチを披露しました。美しい発音やアクセントで話せるよう練習を重ね、話し方や身振り手振りにも表現が込められた素晴らしいスピーチに対して、集まった生徒たちから惜しみない拍手が送られていました。
　内容は自分の好きなこと、学校活動、幸福，自分の宝物など多岐に渡っています。どれも大変説得力があり、頷いたり、時には涙を誘われたり、ユーモアに笑わされたりと、どのスピーチにもそれぞれの良さがあり、個性が出ていて、心を動かされました。母語ではない英語（留学生は日本語）で文章を考え、練習し、そして人前で披露することは大変難しく，勇気がいることですが，一人一人が英語村の舞台でそれを立派にやり遂げたことを誇りに思います。
　今回のHELLO Village Week のテーマは『Identity: What Makes You Unique?』でした。この言葉にはHELLO Village Week中の様々なイベントに参加することで自分について理解を深め、自分をよりよく表現してほしいという思いが込められていました。思っていたよりもうまく表現できなかったなど残念な気持ちもあるかもしれませんが、それも含めて今日はそれぞれが果敢にもスピーチに挑戦してくれたことを嬉しく思います。

　On Nov. 22nd, as the final event of HELLO Village Week II, 8th KRIS CUP English Speech Contest was held at HELLO Village. We had 9 first-graders, 9 second-graders, and 3 exchange students as participants this time. We were amazed by their expressive speeches because we could tell how much efforts they made for their great speeches. The themes of the speeches were from what they like, school activities, happiness, to their treasures. All the speeches effectively expressed their ideas, thoughts, and feelings. The audience laughed by their humor and was moved by their stories. It is quite tough to think in non-native languages and make a speech in public, but we are proud of our students who did it well at the stage of HELLO Village.
　We have ‘Identity: What Makes You Unique?’ as the theme of HELLO Village Week II. We chose this word because we want students to get a better and deeper understanding about themselves and express what they are by interacting with other students and people with different backgrounds during this week. In their challenge, some students might think ‘I could have expressed myself better’, but that’s okay. We are really glad that they courageously challenged themselves by making a speech in KRIS CUP.

HELLO Village Week II Day5 Part 1

　HELLO Village Week IIの５日目は、お昼休みにミッションの獲得ポイントが２倍になる「Globy Point Spree」が開催されました。多くの生徒たちがHELLO Villageを訪れ、英語の4技能が向上するように工夫された様々なミッションをこなしました。例えば、将来の夢についてALTたちに１分間説明するスピーキングの課題をしたり、自分が持つ強みについて説明するライティングの課題をしたりしていました。それ以外にも、生徒たちは友達にメッセージカードを書いたり、ALTたちとゲームをしたりしていました。

　On Nov. 22nd, Day4 of HELLO Village Week II, we had ‘Globy Point Spree’ during lunchtime. In this event, students can get double Globy points, and so quite a few students actually visited HELLO Village and carried out their missions. These missions are designed for students to improve their English skills. For example, one speaking mission is to talk about their future dreams for one minute, and one writing mission is to write about their biggest strength. Moreover, in order to get Globy points, students enjoyed doing extra missions such as writing massages to their friends, and playing games with ALTs.

HELLO Village Week Day4 Part 2

　HELLO Village Week II 4日目の放課後は「HELLO Village Week Poster Session」が行われました。8つの発表グループが二組に分かれ、合計2回ずつセッションを行いました。発表者と発表内容については以下の通りです。留学生のナットさん、ケイティさん、エミリーさんがそれぞれ故郷であるタイ、ワシントン州（アメリカ）、カリフォルニア州（アメリカ）について、豊かな自然や有名な観光地などと共に紹介してくれました。ALTのディバルドさんが自分の出身国である南アフリカについて、また英語科の西川先生が留学先のオランダについて、その国の特徴や暮らしなどを交えて話してくれました。日吉の生徒の発表は3グループありました。まずは都農町フィールドワークに参加した生徒が宮崎県都農町で現地の人たちと行った活動について発表しました。次に、トビタテ！留学JAPANでイギリスに留学した生徒が留学制度の紹介と自身の留学体験について話してくれました。そして最後は、JAPANAMプログラムに参加した生徒がベトナムのレクイドン高校の生徒たちと一緒に東京で行った活動について紹介してくれました。
　ポスターセッションに集まった多くの生徒たちは、興味深い内容にうなずきながら聞いたり、疑問に思ったことは最後のQ&Aセクションで質問したりしていました。

　On Nov. 21st, Day4 of HELLO Village Week II, there was the event ‘HELLO Village Week Poster Session’. We had the following 8 speakers or groups: one ALT, an English teacher, three exchange students, three Hiyoshi student-groups.
　Here are the topics in the poster session. Our ALT, Dewald, gave a talk about his country, South Africa. An English teacher, Nishikawa sensei, talked about her experience of studying abroad in Netherlands. Three exchange students, Nat, Katie, Emily, respectively introduced their home countries or states, Thailand, Washington (America), California (America), especially in terms of nature and sight-seeing places. The first student-group gave a speech about what they have done in Tsuno-chou Fieldwork in Miyazaki. The second group talked about their experiences in UK when they joined Tobitate Japan Studying Abroad Program. The third group introduced their activity with Vietnamese students in JAPANAM program. Each poster session was popular and attended by many students who listened to the speakers with increasing interest and asked questions in Q&A section.
　Finally, only one more day is left! Tomorrow, we will have two events ‘Globy Point Spree’ at lunch time and ‘KRIS CUP Speech Contest’ after school.

HELLO Village Week II Day4 Part I

　11月21日（火）、HELLO Village Week II ４日目のお昼休みは「Hiyoshi Idol Talent Show」が行われました。英語村にはたくさんの生徒や先生が集まり、発表者たちの素晴らしいパフォーマンスを時には固唾を飲んで見守り、時には歓声を上げて応援していました。今回は５組のグループがダンス、弾き語り、バンド演奏などを披露してくれました。どのパフォーマンスにも、会場に集まった生徒・先生たちから、惜しみない拍手が送られていました。この後は放課後に「HELLO Village Week Poster Session」が行われます。

　On Nov.21st, Day 4 of HELLO Village Week II, we had the lunchtime event ‘Hiyoshi Idol Talent Show’. So many students and teachers came to HELLO Village and held their breaths or cheered for the students who were a bit nervous but showed their talents and made amazing performances. On the show, we had 5 student performances: singing with instrumental accompaniment (3 groups), dance, and band performance. Each performance group received generous applause from the audience!
　Today, another event ‘Poster Session’ is also waiting for us this afternoon.

HELLO Village Week II Day3

　11月20日（月）、HELLO Village Week II ３日目の放課後は「Open ESS」が開催されました。集まった40名ほどの生徒たちは「Identity Roulette」というアクティビティに参加しました。このアクティビティでは、まず生徒たちはそれぞれ「What is your hobby?」や「What are your dreams or goals for the future?」といった６つの質問に答えました。ただし、正直に答える必要はなく、想像力豊かに自由に答えることができました。その後、生徒たちは自分の答えと他の人の答えを入れ替えて、いろいろな人の答えから構成されるどこにもいないユニークな人物を作り出しました。とても面白いアクティビティで、思いもよらない特徴を持った人物が何人も生み出されました。Open ESSの最後はミッションをこなすと２倍のポイントがもらえる臨時の「Globy Point Spree」が行われました。
　HELLO Village Weekも残すところ2日となりました。明日はお昼休みに「Hiyoshi Idol Talent Show」、放課後に「Poster Session」が行われます。

　On Nov. 20th, Day 3 of HELLO Village Week II, we had ‘Open ESS’ afterschool. About 40 students got together at HELLO Village and joined the activity ‘Identity Roulette’. In this activity, they first answered 6 questions such as ‘What is your hobby?’ and ‘What would your friends or family say about you?’. Here, they were allowed to make imaginative or fictional answers. After that, they exchanged their answers for other students’ ones in order to make a unique person whose features are composed of other students’ answers. The second and last activity was the mini ‘Globy Point Spree’. Students energetically did their missions and tried their best for getting many Globy points.
　Only two more days are left for HELLO Village Week II! ‘Hiyoshi Idol Talent Show’ and ‘Poster Session’ are waiting for us tomorrow.
