HELLO Village Week 2 Day 5 (Pub Quiz)

　HELLO village Week 最後のイベントとして、日吉ケ丘生徒にはお馴染みの『Pub Quiz』（イギリスのパブ発祥の、皆で楽しめるクイズ大会）が行われました。英語を使いながらチームで協力し、真剣に考えたり、考えを出し合いました。昼休みの最後まで歓声に溢れ、最後を飾るにふさわしい、楽しいイベントとなりました。
　今回のHELLO Village Week は，二年次生はもちろんのこと、一年次生の参加人数も増えました。また受験勉強の合間を縫って、三年次生も顔を出してくれ、全ての学年が共に英語村での時間を楽しんでくれたように思います。
　これからも英語村が国籍、性別、学年、コースなど、全てを越えた交流の場であってほしいと願っています。

　On Nov. 26th, as the last event, ‘Pub Quiz’ was held at HELLO Village. Students worked with other team-members to win the first place. The Village was full of their shouts of joy until the end of Lunch-time. This shows HELLO Village Week ended with success！
　This time, more first-graders joined the event, let alone second-graders. Moreover, third-graders also visited the village during a break in their studies. So, after all, students from all the three grades together enjoyed this event!
　We hope HELLO Village is a communication space for everybody regardless of nationality, age, gender, and educational courses, now and ever.

HELLO Village Week 2 Day 4 (Kris Cup)

　HELLO Village Weekも4日目となりました。11月25日放課後は、第5回クリス杯スピーチコンテストが開かれ、予選を勝ち抜いた1年次生5名、2年次生8名がそれぞれの思いを英語で述べました。
　スピーチのテーマとしては世界で、起こっている差別、環境破壊などの問題や、身近なことから疑問を持ち、考えた内容、自分自身のことなど多岐に渡り、聴衆も考えさせられると共に学ばせてもらいました。一年次生は英文の構成、内容共にしっかりと考えられており、また、初めてのコンテストとは思えない堂々とした発表態度に感銘を受けました。二年次生は内容、プレゼンテーション方法共にさらに磨きがかかりました。はっきりと分かりやすく話せることはもちろん、抑揚を付け、要点を強調した話し方や、印象的なキーワードを繰り返す等、表現の工夫にも長けており、聴衆の心を捉えました。
　また、勉強の合間を縫って、三年次生や卒業生も応援に駆けつけてくれました。本コンテストが日吉ケ丘の伝統として受け継がれていること、後輩が先輩の姿を見て憧れ育ち、先輩が後輩を応援していることを実感しました。

　On Nov. 25th, as an after-school event, we had ‘5th Kris Cup English Speech Contest’ at HELLO Village. 5 first-grade students and 8 second-grade students who passed the preliminary round joined the contest.
　These participants talked about various topics such as discrimination, environmental destruction, and things close to themselves, which were thought-provoking as well as instructive. For the first-graders, while this was the first time, they confidently made speeches that were well-structured and rich in content. For the second-graders, since this was the second time, their speeches were more sophisticated than last year in terms of content and expression. They grasped the audience by speaking clearly, intonating, emphasizing, and repeating the key words effectively.
　The audience includes teachers and alumni as well as third-grade students who joined during a break in their studies. Kris Cup is already a Hiyoshigaoka tradition where kohai admires senpai, and senpai roots for kohai.

HELLO Village Week 2 Day 3 (Talent Show and The Art of Storytelling)

　11月24日（火），HELLO Village Week 3日目は，昼休みにタレントショーが行われました。今回の出場者は４名で，歌唱，マジック，1人漫才，ギター弾き語りを披露してくれました！
　放課後には「The Art of Storytelling」が開催されました。このイベントでは物語を読む手法とその効果を学んだ後、ALT手作りの紙の焚き火を囲んで皆で物語を読み合いました。まずは読み方や聴衆を巻き込む工夫を、3人のALTのモデルリーディングを味わいながら学びました。ドラマチックな朗読に皆引き込まれ、物語とその表現方法の威力を知りました。その後、生徒がグループに分かれて、英語村マスコットキャラクターグロービーの生い立ちについての物語を英語で作成し、朗読劇で紹介しました。どれも創造的で興味深く、素晴らしい作品ができました。

　On Nov. 24th, as a lunch-time event, we had ‘Talent Show’ at HELLO Village. Four talented students made great performances (singing a song, magic, standup comedy, and singing with a guitar).
　As an after-school event, ‘The Art of Storytelling’ was also held. In this event, students at first learned how to tell stories and the efficacy of storytelling, then actually carried out storytelling, surrounding a paper bonfire made by ALTs. First, ALTs demonstrated storytelling for giving some tips of it. Their dramatic storytelling effectively enabled students to experience the power of storytelling. Then, students made stories about Globy (a mascot of HELLO Village) and told the stories to other students. Each performance deserved to be called an excellent storytelling.

HELLO Village Week 2 Day 2 (Open ESS)

　HELLO Village Week二日目は，放課後に「Open ESS」が開催されました。今回は集まった生徒たちで，いくつかのアクティヴィティに英語で挑戦しました：碁盤の目のように並んだ文字から意味のある言葉を探し出す「Word Search」、虫食いになっている文章に英単語を入れて物語を作る「Story Writer」、与えられたヒントから正しい英単語を導く「Hot Seat」などなど。生徒たちは思わぬ言葉を発見したり，正解を導いたりするたびに歓声を上げて，アクティヴィティを楽しんでいました。

　On Nov. 20th, Open ESS was held as a Day 2 Event in HELLO Village Week 2. This time, students challenged the following English activities: ‘Word Search’ (finding meaningful words (famous cities in the world) from letters arranged in a grid-like way), ‘Story Writer’ (making a story by filling incomplete sentences with words), ‘Hot Seat’ (guessing the correct English words from the given hints). Whenever they found unexpected words or reached the correct answers, students shouted for joy!

HELLO Village Week 2 Day 1 (Opening and Thrift Shop)

　11月19日（木）本校英語村にてHELLO Village Week 2がはじまりました。昼休みにはオープニングセレモニーが行われ，太山教頭の「コロナ禍で海外に行くことが難しい中，英語村では留学体験ができることをうれしく思う」とのスピーチ，クリス村長の「とにかくこの期間を楽しもう！」との言葉で幕が開き，生徒会英語村委員長，2年次生下間さんと副委員長高山さんの"Let's enjoy HELLO Village Week together!"の声に大きな拍手と歓声が起こりました。
　放課後は，「日吉ケ丘越境プロジェクト」として，有志の生徒が自分たちや教職員から使わなくなった本，服，文房具などを回収し，安価で販売，売り上げを寄付する，「スリフトショップ」イベントを英語村にて開催しました。
　2年次生松尾そらさんが昨年度，京都市教育委員会主催グローバルリーダー育成研修でフィリピンを訪れ，そこで貧困に苦しむ人々に何かをしたいと感じ，3年次生山崎結衣さんと協力してボランティア活動を行うプロジェクトを立ち上げたことがきっかけです。今はコロナウィルス感染症対策の影響で，フィリピンに物品を送ることが難しく，他に自分たちにできることは何かと考え，このスリフトショップの売り上げを国内でコロナ感染症に苦しむ人々に寄付することにしました。
　コロナウィルス感染症対策として，全ての商品は消毒し，パーティションを設けて販売する等，様々な苦労がありましたが，多くの生徒や先生方が商品を購入してくれ，大成功に終わることができました。ご協力ありがとうございました。

「日吉ケ丘越境プロジェクト」生徒からのメッセージ：
　本日のスリフトショップにご協力ありがとうございました。多くの人が買いにきてくれ，大盛況に終わりました。本日の売り上げは5350円でした。このお金は日本財団『災害復興特別基金<新型コロナウィルス緊急支援>』に寄付させていただきます。今後もご協力をお願いします。

　HELLO Village Week 2 Started on Nov.19th. In the opening ceremony, we had the speeches by the vice-principal Yoko Tayama (‘I’m glad students in Hiyoshi are able to have the experience of studying abroad here at HELLO Village’) and The Mayor Kris (‘Let’s enjoy HELLO Village Week!!’). Then, HELLO Village Committee members Moeka and Yumemi declared the opening of HELLO Village Week 2.
　Afterschool, as an event of Hiyoshigaoka Transbordering Project, we had Thrift Shop where students sold things donated from teachers and students such as cloths, books, and stationaries at a discount price. This project was launched by the second-grade student Sora Matsuo and the third-grade student Yui Yamazaki. When Sora visited Philippines during the Global Leader Training Course last year, she saw people who live in poverty and thought of what to do for them. Unfortunately, in this Corona-Era, it’s difficult to send relief supplies to Philippines. Their answer was to donate the sales of Thrift Shop to COVID-19 patients in Japan. This event was really successful, although there were some hardships such as disinfecting all the goods and setting the partitions for preventive measures.

14th Recitation Contest @ HELLO Village

　新型コロナウィルスの影響で一時開催が危ぶまれましたが，11月14日（土），今年もレシテーションコンテストを無事開催することができました。今年は一次選考を通過した京都府内の中学生9名が参加してくれました。
　今回の課題「Love is Action」は，「We Are the World」という有名な曲にまつわるストーリーが主題でした。課題英文の一部に歌詞が含まれ，それをどのように表現するのかなど，参加者の間でプレゼンに対するスタイルの違いが見られました。参加者たちはみな緊張した面持ちで自分の出番を待っていましたが，どのスピーチも，発音，暗唱，表現力など，いずれの点においても素晴らしいものでした。1つ1つの発表が終わるたび，安堵の表情を浮かべる発表者に対して，会場にいたすべての人たちが惜しみない拍手を送っていました。
　採点者たちが頭を抱えて選考している間，コンテスト参加者の健闘を称えて，日吉ヶ丘の生徒たちがクイズ形式のアクティビティ「Pub Quiz」を行ってくれました。発表の終わった生徒たちは，リラックスした表情で「Missing Letter」や「Picture Round」といったクイズを楽しんでいました。
　さて，ジャッジ泣かせのハイレベルな大会で優勝を飾ったのは京都御池中学の定本さん，２位は西京付属中学の倉谷さん，３位は和束中学の渡邊さんでした。今回のレシテーションコンテストに参加してくれた生徒の皆さん，そして保護者の方々，本当にお疲れさまでした。日吉ヶ丘高校英語村でまたお会いできることを楽しみにしております。

　On Nov. 14th, the 14th Hiyoshigaoka Recitation Contest was held at HELLO Village. This time, 9 junior high school students who passed the screening process joined the contest.
　The topic this year was ‘Love is Action’ that is a short story about the famous song ‘We Are the World’. That includes some lyrics of the song to which 9 speakers showed their own approaches. They looked a little bit nervous, waiting for their turns, but each performance was excellent in terms of pronunciation, recitation, expression, and so on. Each speaker received a generous applause from the audience there!
　When the judges had the serious problem deciding which performance was the best, students in Hiyoshigaoka presented ‘Pub Quiz’ for honoring the great contestants. They were already relaxed and enjoyed the activities such as ‘Missing Letter’ and ‘Picture Round’.
　The winner of this high-level contest was Yaya Sadamoto (Kyoto-Oike), followed by Yukino Kuratani (Saikyo) and Masaki Watanabe (Wazuka). Thank you very much for visiting HELLO Village. We are really looking forward to seeing you again here in Hiyoshigaoka.

Halloween Party @ HELLO Village (Part I)

　10月28日（水）放課後，英語村でハロウィンパーティーが開催され，様々な（架空の）人物・動物などに扮した生徒が英語村に集合しました！まずパーティの前半は，ALTのJordanさんによるハロウィンの起源や歴史についての説明があり，そのあと生徒たちはグループに分かれて，ハロウィンに関連した次の5つのブースを1つずつ回りました：（１）フランケンシュタインといったモンスターがどこの国に起源をもつのかを答える「Monster Match」，（２）碁盤の目のように並んだ文字からハロウィンに関連した言葉を探し出す「Halloween Word Search」，（３）ミステリーを聞いた後，その物語についての質問に答える「Story Telling」，（４）提示された幻想的な風景に生息していそうなモンスターを創造する「Into the Woods」，（５）ハロウィンに関連した言葉をジェスチャーで表現して，他のチームメンバーに当ててもらう「Gesture Game」。生徒たちは，ALTたちと英語で会話しながら，１つ１つのブースを楽しんでいました。

　Halloween Party was held at HELLO Village after school on October 28th. Students enjoyed wearing their favorite costumes and disguised as someone or something else. At the beginning, our ALT Jordan (whose costume was Ken in a video game ‘Street Fighter’) gave a talk about the beginning and the history of Halloween. The audiences were imaginary entities such as Tinker Bell and famous figures such as a Major Leaguer, Shohei Ootani (or dressed-up students).
　After the talk, students were asked to become detectives and solve an imaginary murder case at HELLO Village by participating the following five activities: (1) Monster Match (Finding the original countries of various monsters), (2) ‘Word Search’ (finding Halloween-related words from letters arranged in a grid-like way), (3) ‘Story Telling’ (Listening to a mystery and answering the questions of the story), (4) ‘Into the Woods’ (creating monsters that might live in given imaginary pictures), (5) ‘Gesture Game’ (Helping other team members answer questions by gesturing Halloween-related topics). The students talked with ALTs in English and enjoyed each booth very much.

Halloween Party @ HELLO Village (Part II)

　ハロウィンパーティーの後半は，恒例となっているジャック・オー・ランタン作り。生徒たちは自分の顔の何倍もある巨大なかぼちゃを前に楽し気。その大きさに悪戦格闘しつつ、かぼちゃに顔を描いて、大騒ぎでかぼちゃの中に手を突っ込んでいました。その努力の甲斐あって、個性的なジャック・オー・ランタンがいくつも生まれました。
　イベントの最後に、新たに加わったオレンジ色の「住人たち」と一緒に記念撮影をして、大盛況のもとに「Happy Halloween」は終了しました。
　
　The main event was, of course, making Jack-o’-Lantern. Facing huge pumpkins that were almost two times as big as their heads, students worked together for carving pumpkins and put their hands in them. As a result of their efforts, we got seven Jack-o’-Lanterns each of which has its own unique face!
　At the end, we wrapped up ‘Happy Halloween’ Event by taking a group photo with seven new ‘orange’ villagers, as you can see above.

Autumn Pub Quiz Challenge @ HELLO Village

　10月21日（水），恒例となっている秋の「Pub Quiz」が英語村で開催されました。放課後，英語村に集まった生徒たちは６チームに分かれ、クリス村長から出題されるクイズに挑戦しました。今回の問題は、碁盤の目のように並んだ文字から意味のある言葉を探し出す「Word Search」、漫画10タイトルを発行部数の多い順に並べる「Picture Round」，他のチームの解答を予測して同じ解答を導き出す「Common Answer」，洋楽のPVを見てその曲に関する問題に答える「Music Video」でした。生徒たちは、正解するたびに、ガッツポーズをして，大いに盛り上がっていました。今回も熾烈なトップ争いの結果、同点で１位に輝いたのはチーム「Koi King」とチーム「We Want to Eat Gyudon」でした。
　この後も，英語村では10月28日（水）に「Halloween Party」を開催予定です。今年も個性的なジャック・オー・ランタンが英語村に出現するでしょう！

　On Oct. 21st, we had HELLO Village event ‘Pub Quiz’ after school. 6 student teams faced the following quiz challenges from Kris: ‘Word Search’ (finding meaningful words from letters arranged in a grid-like way), ‘Picture Round’ (putting 10 manga titles in a right order), ‘Common Answers’ (guessing the same answer shared by the other teams), and ‘Music Video’ (Watching a music video and answering the questions concerning the video). Whenever students got a right answer, they raised their arms in triumph! This time, we have the two teams as the winners: Team ‘Koi King’ and Team ‘We Want to Eat Gyudon’.
　We are also planning Halloween Party next week. Students will wrestle with huge pumpkins and make Jack-o’-Lanterns come into HELLO Village.

HELLO Village Week Day 4

HELLO Village Week最終日，多くの生徒がHELLO Village Weekの冊子を使っての英語ゲームやミッションに挑戦し，英語を話したり書いたりしてポイントを獲得しました。放課後には"Nonverbal Communication（非言語コミュニケーション）"についてのプレゼンテーションが本校ALTニコールとダニエルによって行われました。コロナウィルスの影響で対面の会話が難しくなっている今日，言語以外の手段を通してコミュニケーションが取れる可能性と，言語を使わずに表現することの大切さを学びました。ボディランゲージ，ジェスチャー，道具（扇子）を使ってデモンストレーションを行ったり，最後には将来の非言語コミュニケーションの可能性と予想について英語で話し合いました。
私たちは言語を通してコミュニケーションを取っているようですが，その他の多くの要素が気持ちを表現していることを改めて認識しました。コロナの影響で様々なことが制限されていますが，その中で思いを伝えるために何をしていけばよいか考えるよいきっかけとなりました。

HELLO Village Week Miniの4日間，多くの生徒が英語村に足を運び，楽しい時間を過ごしてくれたことを心よりうれしく思います。
これからも，全員の安心安全を確保しながら，HELLO Villageを皆で盛り上げて
いきましょう。

　On the final day of HELLO Village Week, quite a few students carried out the missions on the booklet and got Globy points.
　As an after-school event, ALTs Nicholl and Daniel gave a talk about non-verbal communication in this era of the coronavirus. Students learned the importance of expressing what they think and making them understood without any spoken languages. They actually used folding fans (Sensu), body languages and gestures, and then discussed the possibilities of non-verbal communication. At the end of the talk, students realized it is true that we communicate our thoughts through spoken languages, but we also express our emotions and feelings non-verbally. It was a good opportunity for students to think of what to do for expressing their thoughts and feelings in this coronavirus era
　We are really glad so many students visited and enjoyed HELLO Village during this four-day event. Let’s keep HELLO Village lively together!
