英語村一般市民向けアクティビティ第3弾「PUB QUIZ2」

夏休み明けに実施される一般市民向けアクティビティ第3弾は、恒例の「PUB QUIZ2」です。この「PUB QUIZ」は、グループに分かれてチームで相談しながら答えを導き出します。お茶とお菓子をいただきながら自然な形で英語が身に付くとても楽しい企画となっています。今回もクリス村長が問題を考えています。興味のある方は、是非ご参加ください。ＡＬＴやボランティアスタッフが優しく補助してくれますので英語が苦手な方も是非チャレンジしてください。

英語村小学生イベント「ENJOY ENGLISH 英語で楽しもう」（午前の部）

７月２９日（月）英語村において小学生向けイベント「ENJOY ENGLISH」が開催されました。このイベントは、小学生に英語で行われる様々なゲームに参加してもらい、自然に英語を身に着けてもらおうという企画です。普段は日吉ヶ丘の生徒で賑わう英語村も、この日は参加した８０名以上の小学生の熱気に包まれました。
　まずイベントが始まる前に、本校ボランティア生徒がマジックを披露してくれました。少し緊張気味だった小学生たちも、このサプライズにすっかりリラックスできた様子でした。その後のオープニングセレモニーでは、英語村村長クリスの挨拶、ALTの紹介がありました。そして、本校留学生Maxによるアイスブレイクが行われ、小学生は近くにいる子と体を使ってアルファベットを作り、「身を以て」英語を表現することに！
身も心も準備万端となったところでグループに分かれ、次の四つのゲームに参加しました：コレクションゲーム（食材カードを集めて料理を完成させる）、アンケートクイズゲーム（様々なジャンルの人気順位に答える）、すごろくゲーム（双六しながら、好きなものを尋ねる）、ミステリーボックス（箱の中身を手で触り推理する）。各グループは、イベントの主役である小学生、リーダーとしてALT、その補佐として中学生と高校生のボランティアという構成。そして、そのグループを取り囲むように、わが子の活躍を少し心配そうな表情で見守る保護者の方々。
さて、いったんゲームが始まると、英語村のいたるところで参加者の歓声、拍手、笑い声が巻き起こり、イベントは一気にヒートアップ。最初は少し恥ずかしそうに話していた子も、自分が英語を話していることも忘れて、夢中になっていました。ゲームが進むにつれて、お互いに助け合うことで、グループ内に連帯感が生まれ、より多くの生きた会話が英語という言語を通して生まれました。
「ENJOY ENGLISH」は、その名の通り、英語で話す楽しさを小学生に届け、大盛況のうちに幕を閉じることができました。イベントの終わりには、ALTとボランティアの生徒が手をつないで作ったアーチの中を、まだ興奮の冷めやらぬ小学生たちが駆け抜けていきました。
このイベントにご参加いただいたみなさま、ありがとうございました。そして、このイベントで活躍してくれたALTとボランティアの方々、お疲れ様でした。

On July 29th, we had an event for elementary school kids, ‘Enjoy English’, in which the kids join various activities and naturally learn English throughout the event. HELLO Village is usually lively with high-school students at Hiyoshigaoka, but was filled up with the enthusiasm of the elementary school kids today!
As a small pre-event, there was a magic show performed by volunteers from Hiyoshigaoka. This surprise present nicely helped the kids release mental tension and get relaxed! The event was then kicked off by the speech of Kris (the mayor of HELLO village) and the introductions of ALTs. As an ice breaking activity, Max (an international student at Hiyoshigaoka) gave them the task of making alphabets such as W and Q by their bodies. They naturally co-worked with other kids and literally made the body expressions of some English words!
At this point, they were ready enough in terms of both body and mind for the four main English activities: Collection Game (making foods by collecting ingredient-cards), Quiz Game (Answering high-rankers in various genres), Sugoroku (Asking favorites of others through Sugoroku), and Mystery Box (Touching something in the box only by hands and guessing what it is). Each group had 3 or 4 ALTs, junior- and high-school student volunteers, and about 10 elementary school kids, whose parents, with a shadow of anxiety, looked at their kids.
Once the activities started, HELLO Village was filled up with gales of laughter, shouts of joy, and a round of applause. While some kids were a bit shy at first, as the games heated up, they immersed themselves in it even without being aware of their speaking English! Also, as the event proceeded, the group members helped each other and showed the teamwork, leading to real conversations in English.
The time to say good-bye is always a bit sad. At the end of the event, ALTs and the student-volunteers held their hands for making small arches, and the school kids walked under the arches, saying good-bye.
We are really glad you enjoyed the event as the name ‘Enjoy English’ says!

終業式で「HELLO Village Week１」の表彰

去る７月１９日（金）１学期の終業式が行われ、女子剣道部・男子剣道部・相撲部・バドミントン部・書道部・少林寺拳法や将棋など多くの部活動や個人が古池校長から表彰されました。最後に、１学期の「HELLO Village Week１」でイベントやミッションに参加し、多くのグロービーポイントをゲットした各学年個人の優勝〜第３位まで、各学年で最もポイントを集めたクラスが表彰されました。おめでとうございます。また、２学期にも「HELLO Village Week２」が行われますので、また挑戦してください。みんなで英語を楽しみましょう!!

サマーディキャンプ

7月13日（土）2年次生の希望者30名が本校英語村にてサマーディキャンプに参加しました。
昨年度海外研修旅行、修学旅行に参加した2年次生が、本校教員、14名のALTと共に、英語のみを使用した言語活動を集中的に行うことにより、多様な文化的背景を理解し、英語の運用能力をさらに高め、自ら主体的にコミュニケーションを図る態度を養うことが目的です。
生徒は、与えられたミッションを英語を使い、グループで協力しながら解決する様々な活動に参加しました。
アイスブレイキング活動の後、まずグループで英語のスローガンを作り、それぞれグループの旗をipadを用いてデザイン、それらのプレゼンテーションを行い、グループの団結を高めました。その後はスカベンジャーハントで東福寺付近を歩き回ってミッションを遂行しました。
ランチにはホットドッグ、ピザ、ポテト、デザートにはアイククリーム等、ALTの出身地であるカナダ・アメリカ等でよく食べられるものが出され、食べながら英語カラオケを楽しみました。
午後は与えられたアイテムの英語CMを作成しました。英語を駆使し、創造力を使って、楽しみながら成果物を作成することができました。
最後のミッションはおなじみPUB QUIZです。難問も続々出題されましたが、協力して楽しく行うことができました。
1日中英語のみで意思疎通し、何かを行うことは大変ですが、やりがいもあったかと思います。本校教育活動のプラットフォームである英語村で多くの生徒が一日中、懸命に取り組み、想像し、交流できたことを嬉しく思います。
今日1日でついた英語力はもちろん大きな成果ですが、本日全ての活動や交流がそれぞれのモチベーションに繋がり、今後何を学ぶべきか考える機会となることを期待します。

On July 13th, 30 second-year students joined ‘Summer Day Camp’ at HELLO Village. Last year, they gained international experiences through an overseas study trip. This year, they together with teachers and ALTs attended this camp whose objective is to understand diverse cultural backgrounds, improve English proficiency, and actively make a communication with others.
In this camp, students as a group cooperated together in English for accomplishing assigned missions. At the beginning, each group created a slogan, designed a team flag, and explained what they mean by the slogan flag. Students naturally developed teamwork through this cooperative work, making themselves ready for the next, Scavenger Hunt. In this second activity, students walked around Tofukuji Temple and carried out the missions.
At lunch time, hungry students had a mission to enjoy a variety of foods and desserts such as hot dogs, pizzas, French fries, and ice cream! Another lunch-time mission was to sing karaoke songs in English, such as ‘A Whole New World’ (from the movie ‘Aladdin’).
The first activity after lunch was to make a commercial of assigned items such as country flags, wigs, and stuffed animals. Each group unleashed imagination and produced a humorous and creative work! The final activity at the camp was, as we all know, ‘Pub Quiz’ in which teamwork was the key for solving brain twisters.
While it was challenging to follow ‘English Only’ throughout the camp, students also found it a worthwhile task at the same time. We are really glad that they seriously engaged in the event, reaching fruitful accomplishments! Providing such an opportunity is the raison d'etre of HELLO Village here at Hiyoshigaoka High School.
We hope Today’s successful experiences lead students to a further motivation for what they want to do in the future.

ハロコミイベント HELLO Village Summer Festival

　7月11日英語村においてクリス村長、本校ALT、英語村ボランティアハロコミ企画によるSummer Festivalが開催されました。
　オープニングに英語を使用した楽しいクイズ等でウォーミングアップをした後、いよいよ夏まつりに参加します。英語村内にはヨーヨー釣り、スーパーボールすくい、射的、グロービー福笑い、カードゲーム、フォトブースなどが設けられ、生徒はそれぞれ好きなブースで英語を用いながら活動を楽しみました。
　その後はスカベンジャーハント（校内を歩き回って与えられた指示に書かれたものを探すアクティビティ）を行いました。手にはヨーヨー、スーパーボール、射的の商品を持ち、顔には満面の笑み。祇園祭より一足お先に夏祭りを皆で楽しむことができました。
　この日の為に準備、英語を使っての店員の役割、後片付けをしてくれたハロコミボランティアの生徒に感謝します。


　Summer Festival 2019 was held at HELLO Village on July 11th. This is an event organized by Kris (the head of HELLO Village), Hiyoshigaoka’s ALTs, and HELLO Committee members.
The event was kicked off by solving quizzes that naturally brought students into the English-speaking mode. After that, students looked around a variety of stands at HELLO Village: Yo-yo fishing, Bouncy-ball scooping, Shooting, Make-a-face game, Card Games, Photo Booth, and so on!
　As a final activity, there was Scavenger Hunt in which students had a task to find specified items scattered around the school. They walked around with yo-yos, bouncy-balls, prizes they got by Shooting, and smiles on their faces. This might be an eve of Gion Festival for them.
　HELLO committee members made a good preparation, worked as staff members at booths, and cleaned up the venue. We really appreciate their support!!

一般向けActivity Earth Day

６月２９日（土）、今年度二回目の一般市民向けアクティビティ「Earth Day」（地球環境をテーマにディスカッションなどを通して英語を身につけてもらおうという企画）が「英語村」（HELLO Village）で開催されました。今回は、ご参加されたみなさまで６つのグループを作っていただき、本校ALTの二コルさんから提示される環境問題に関連したトピックに対して、英語で議論していただきました。
私たちは地球環境を守るために何ができるのでしょうか？　本イベントでは、この難しい問いにアプローチしていただくため、（1）「グローバル」、(2)「ナショナル」、(3)「コミュニティ」、(4)「個人」という四つのレベルを設定し、何ができるのかを具体的に話し合っていただきました。「個人」のレベルでは、たとえば「買物にエコバックで行く」「水筒をつかう」「プラスティックをきちんとリサイクルする」など、「コミュニティ」のレベルでは「SNSなどを通じて情報共有をする」「美化活動のボランティアに参加する」などのアイデアを提示していただきました。
今年度も、引続き皆様に楽しんでいただける企画で用意しております。次回の一般市民向けアクティビティは９月の予定で、また日程が近づきましたら日吉ケ丘高校HPからご案内をさせていただきます。今回は、ありがとうございました。

The second open event this year ‘Earth Day’ was held at HELLO Village on June 29th. This time, we had 20 participants who listened to a talk given by Nicholl (our school’s ALT) and discussed in a group questions concerning climate change and global warming.
‘Facing environmental issues, what can we do for our planet Earth?’ That is a hard question. In this event, in order to think of it in a specific manner, the four levels (1) Global, (2) National, (3) Community, (4) Individual, were set. We had the ideas such as ‘Shopping with ego bags ’, ‘Using water bottles’, and ‘Properly recycling plastics’ for (4), and ‘sharing information via SNS’ and ‘ Joining cleaning activities as a volunteer’ for (3).
　We are also planning other open events this year, and the next one will be in September. As usual, the information will be on this Website as the date gets closer. See you next time!

HELLO Village Week 最終日

　6月26日（水）昼休み、2019年度第1回目のHELLO Village Week最後を飾ったのは、お馴染み、クリス村長の「Pub Quiz」。今回は特別に京都大学の留学生16名も参加し、会場は大賑わい。国籍・年齢を超え、チームメイトと協力しながら、夢中でクイズに取り組みました。あちこちで歓声や笑い声が飛び交い、HELLO Village Week最大の盛り上がりが見られました。
　1週間、多くの生徒が様々なイベントや英語のミッションに参加しました。英語村では毎日、多くの生徒の笑顔が見られ、歓声と活気にあふれていました。英語を通して友達と、先生と、海外の方々とコミュニケーションを取り、何かを成し遂げた、未知の世界を覗くことができた、わくわくした、楽しかった―この1週間、少しでもそんな気持ちを感じ、今後、自分の世界をますます広げてくれることを願っています。

　On June 26th, the last day of HELLO Village Week this semester, the final event was Kris’ ‘Pub Quiz’. HELLO Village was so crowded with a lot more students and teachers than usual and also special guests, 16 international students, from Kyoto University. Students of different ages and countries worked together to answer questions for winning the first prize. Whenever the answers were announced, HELLO Village was filled up with gales of laughter and shouts of joy! This was obviously the most exciting moment throughout the Week.
　So many students joined various events and did their missions during the HELLO Village Week. Every day, at HELLO Village, we saw students laughing, dancing and shouting with joy! They communicated in English with friends, teachers and international students, tried to achieve the same goal, and glimpsed at an unknown world. We hope the exciting and fruitful experiences during the Week will help students broaden their horizons.

HELLO Village Week 3日目

　6月24日放課後、Green Eventと題し、地球環境と気候変動について考える取り組みが、本校ALTのニコール先生によって行われました。
　私たちの命を支える自然が私たちの手によって壊され、気候変動が起こり、地球全体が急激に変化しています。私たちの生活にも影響が出てきたことは、昨年の猛暑や多数の台風で実感していましたが、改めて、世界中の氷山が崩壊し、森林が壊され、恐ろしいスピードで生態系のバランスが崩れている様子を映像やグラフ、数字で確認することにより、他人事ではない恐怖に襲われました。また、スウェーデンの15歳の少女が気候変動を世界に訴える国連でのスピーチを見て、ここで今日集まり、ニコール先生の講義と思いを熱心に聞き、考える生徒たちもまた、未来にはまだ希望があり、それは地球をよい方向に変えていく希望だと強く感じました。



生徒の感想には以下のようなものがありました

・I was really surprised to see that such a young girl tries to take an action to help the earth. Her presentation touched me and made me realize the importance of each person’s small actions.

・I was so impressed by the young girl. Even though we can do only a small thing, we have to do something right now to protect our earth. The girl told us.

・It is us who can change the world and who should do something to save the nature and our future. Then what do we do next?


これをきっかけに、私たちの母なる地球を守るため、世界のことについてよりよく知り、より考えを深めてくれることを願います。



On June 24th, the third day of HELLO Village week, we had a raising-awareness ‘Green Event’ where our ALT Nicholl gave a talk about climate change and global warming.
　We now face a drastic global change due to our destruction of Mother Earth and the subsequent climate change. We have already known the change has been a big impact on our daily lives, facing heat waves and a number of typhoons last year. In this event, however, we realized again this is not someone else’s business by watching videos that show us glacier destructions and deforestation all over the world, i.e. how quickly our ecosystem has been destroyed.
　We also watched a video where Greta, a 15-year-old Swedish girl, gave a speech at UN Climate Change Conference. This made us strongly believe that students who attended this event and thought so much of this serious problem are also our hope for future restration.
We had a lot of feedbacks from students such as ‘It’s very scary to lose our beautiful planet Earth. I’m inspired by Nicholl’s talk and thinking about what we can and should do for future generations’.

HELO Village Week 2日目 ワールドバザール

　6月21日 HELO Village Week2日目は「ワールドバザール」と題し、本校生徒とALTによるプレゼンテーションが行われました。
　
　本校では1年次に海外研修旅行としてオーストラリア、シンガポール・マレーシアを訪れる他、姉妹校提携を結んだルーマニアの高校訪問、京都市教育委員会主催のグローバルリーダー研修に参加する機会等、多くの国を訪れ、交流をする機会が設けられています。このイベントでは、訪れた国の魅力と自らの経験を2、3年次生が紹介し、1年次生を始めとする聴衆に、世界の様々な国々について興味を持ってもらうことが目的です。
　
　今回は特別に英語村村長クリスと本校ALT、留学生のMaxとDeanも加わり、合計11チーム（7か国を紹介）が2つのグループに分かれて発表を行いました。発表者は写真、現地で購入した物品や想い出の品などを見せながら、スライド・クイズなどを用い、分かりやすく説明すると同時に自分たちの思いを伝えました。自分の経験を生き生きと、誇りを持って話す皆の顔はきらきら輝いていました。また、どの発表も工夫がなされており、大変興味深く、「どの発表もレベルが高く、英語も分かりやすく、驚いた」「その国を訪れたくなった」などの声があちこちから聞かれました。

　日本にあるHELLO Villageのたった一つの部屋で、7つの国々の空気を感じることができ、生徒・教師が共に「越境した」イベントとなりました。

　The main event on the second day of HELLO Village Week was ‘World Bazaar’. In Hiyoshigaoka High School, there are many opportunities for students to visit foreign countries and have face-to-face communications with people there. For instance, students take study trips to Australia, Singapore and Malaysia, visit a sister school at Romania, and join the Global Leader Training Program sponsored by Kyoto City Board of Education Guidance Department.
Here comes today’s event ‘World Bazaar’ where second- and third-year students give talks about their visited counties and make the audience including first-year students, get interested in them. Since there were special guests, Kris (the Mayor of the village), ALTs and two exchange students (Dean and Max) this time, we finally had 11 teams introducing 7 countries.
Presenters tactfully introduced their countries by giving a quiz and using the photos, videos, and what they bought at the countries. Their faces were so brightening when they with confidence were sharing the experiences there. Since each talk was well thought out and thought-provoking, we got the voices from the audience, such as ‘I really want to visit that country!’ and ‘I was really surprised because each talk in English was so nice!’.
HELLO Village is actually a small ‘village’ in Kyoto, but we obviously got the feeling of what it is to visit the countries. We think this is one way to fulfill the educational objective of this school ‘Beyond the hill today, Beyond yourself tomorrow’.
