Debate Competition

Three students from Hiyoshigaoka participated in the 2017 PDWC High School Parliamentary Debate World Conference and Competition in Saitama from February 9th to 16th. 17 schools from around the world participated in this event, from countries such as England, Australia, America, Israel, Hungary and Nigeria.

With the main theme of world peace and the aim of becoming future global peace ambassadors, the first four days were spent practicing debating in English on various topics and competing against the other schools. Compared to many of the other schools, the students from Hiyoshigaoka had very little experience debating going into the competition, but after working very hard the first two days, were able to defeat the representative school from France in their third official match!

After a really intense four days of debates, the remainder of the trip was spent sightseeing around Tokyo with the students from the other schools and going skiing. Although the entire experience was full of challenges, the students came back to Kyoto with a lifetime’s worth of memories and valuable experiences that will help them in the future. Congratulations to the three girls for doing such a fantastic job!!

2017 PDWC高校生パーラメンタリーディベート世界交流大会が、2月9日から2月16日まで埼玉県で実施されました。この大会は、選抜された日本の高校生たちと、世界各国から招聘された高校生がパーラメンタリーディベートを通して国際文化交流を行う大会です。本校からは、２年尼口裕実さん、３年山田歩さん、３年安場夏奈美さんの３人からなるチームで出場してきました。日本以外からは、イギリス、オーストラリア、アメリカ、イスラエル、ハンガリー、ナイジェリアなどの高校生が参加していました。

出場他校に比べ、本校の生徒はディベートの経験がそれほど多くはなかったにも関わらず対戦を重ねるごとに力をつけ、３度目の対戦ではフランス代表に勝つことができました。

その後、各国からの生徒と一緒に交流を兼ねた東京観光や新潟でスキーを行いました。ディベート大会自体は非常にチャレンジングな経験だったと思いますが、今後につながる貴重な経験になったと思います。日吉ケ丘高校を代表して頑張ってくれた３人の生徒たち、ありがとう！
