Parliamentary Debate Seminar

On June 18th, we had a parliamentary debate seminar in HELLO Village. More than 50 students from four senior high schools, about 30 teachers all over Kyoto prefecture gathered in our HELLO Village, and they experienced parliamentary debate in English. Ms. Nakagawa, representative director of PDA (Parliamentary Debate Personnel Development Association), and other staff members came to HELLO Village and taught them what a parliamentary debate is, how to do debating, and in what way they should think about the motion (theme) and express their opinions effectively.

Parliamentary debate is thought to be a good training to enhance logical thinking, critical thinking, presentation skills and so on, which are needed in this globalizing society. Of course it does improve English ability as well, so it is now becoming widespread in English education in Japan.

The students thought debating was difficult but they felt it is very exciting. Hiyoshigaoka students played an important part in this debate. Ms. Sakano Rena, Ms. Kawasaki Ai, Ms. Tanaka Momoko, and Ms. Yamada Ayumi did a model debate in front of a big audience. Mr. Fukuda Ryuji, Ms. Amaguchi Yumi, and Ms. Sakano Rena were chosen as the best debater of each table. You did a great job!

６月１８日、英語村でパーラメンタリーディベート講習会を実施しました。５０名を超える高校生、３０名を超える先生方がここ英語村HELLO Villageに集まりパーラメンタリーディベートを行いました。今回は、ＰＤＡ（一般社団法人パーラメンタリーディベート人財育成協会）の代表理事中川智皓氏をお招きし、６名のスタッフの方たちとともに、まずはパーラメンタリーディベートとはどういうものなのか、どうやってディベートを行うのか、また出されたお題にどう取り組みそれを説得力を持って表現するかを教えてくださりました。

パーラメンタリーディベートはこのグローバル化した世界で必要な論理的思考力や批判的思考力、プレゼンテーション能力などを育成するのにぴったりの活動だといわれています。もちろん英語の力も非常につくので日本でも英語教育において普及し始めています。

生徒たちはディベートに取り組むのは難しいと感じながらも非常に楽しんでいました。特に日吉ケ丘高校の生徒たちは参加校４校（西京・嵯峨野・紫野・日吉ケ丘）の中でも大活躍してくれたと思います。モデルディベートを行った坂埜玲奈さん、川崎愛生さん、田中萌々子さん、山田歩さん、素晴らしかったです。ベストディベータにも福田龍二さん、尼口裕美さん、坂埜玲奈さんが選ばれました。本当に皆頑張ったと思います。
