“Enjoy English,” an event aimed at elementary school students, took place at HELLO Village on Friday, July 27th. A total of 80 6th grade elementary school students came to take part in the morning and afternoon sessions, which were run by close to 20 ALTs from across Kyoto City. After the opening ceremonies, which consisted of a speech by one Hiyoshigaoka High School student and an ice breaking activity, the students were divided into 4 groups and took part in each of the activities run by the ALTs. In one activity, the students tried to earn points by doing rock, paper, scissors and collecting cards of various Kyoto foods and vegetables to make traditional Japanese dishes. In the other activities, the students designed their own Japanese fans, guessed the contents of a mystery box and took part in a Family Feud-style quiz about the ALTs of Kyoto. While the children were quiet and nervous at the beginning of both sessions, they seemed to feel more relaxed as they communicated with others as the day went on, and went home with big smiles on their faces. Thank you to all of the children and parents for participating! We hope to see you at HELLO Village again someday! A special thanks goes to all of the ALTs and members of the Board of Education for all of your hard work in putting this event together.
Due to the effects of the recent earthquake and heavy rains, the HELLO Committee’s “Friday the 13th” event took place one week later than planned on Friday, July 20th, after the closing ceremonies of the 1st term. The students of the HELLO Committee Events group worked long and hard to plan various presentations and games for the day. There was a presentation which talked about the origins of Friday the 13th, along with a quiz about superstitions around the world, a scary version of Broken Telephone and a final Treasure Hunt around HELLO Village and the 4th building of the school. During break time, the students were treated to ice cream with all of their favorite toppings. A big thank you to the many students who came out to enjoy the final event of the first term. We are planning more fun events for the next semester, so we hope to see you all again after the break! Have a wonderful summer vacation everybody!
On Saturday, June 30th, the second public event of the school year took place in HELLO Village. Beginning with a small introduction by Kris, the “Summer Around the World” event saw the ALTs look into how summer is spent and celebrated by people all over the world. The audience learned about the weather in the U.K, the custom of going to cottages and getting summer jobs, got a lesson in dancehall in Jamaica and summer traditions of indigenous peoples in Canada. The participants were also treated to an ice cream break, before the event finished with the groups planning their own original summer event and presenting it to everybody to hear. This event saw a record number of participants, with many new faces along with many of our regular participants. Thank you all for your participation! We hope that everybody enjoyed the event as much as we did, and look forward to seeing you all again! The next event is scheduled for Saturday, September 29th. More details to come on our school website. 「HELLO Village Week1」第5日目Today is the final day of HELLO Village Week, and to finish the event a lunch time Pub Quiz was held. All of the seats were filled with students wanting to participate, with some students standing because they had nowhere to sit. The students all had a great time and laughed a lot throughout the quiz. Many students and teachers visited HELLO Village throughout the week, and it is our hope that this will encourage everyone to come out more often. We hope you all enjoyed the week. HELLO Village Week 2 will take place in the fall. We look forward to seeing everybody take part again. 「HELLO Village Week1」第4日目On the 4th day of HELLO Village Week, we had our “World Debate Presentation” performed by 3 third-year students who took part in the Parliamentary Debate World Competition in the previous school year. The students shared their thoughts and memories from their wonderful experience through their words, photographs and some video footage from the event. They talked about how much they saw themselves grow through competing and spending a week with people from various other countries, winning their final match against the team from Mongolia. The students who came to watch the presentation also learned how to debate and along with the ALTs, participated in a mini-practice debate. Although it was the first time for many of the students, everybody did a fantastic job and felt motivated to do even better next time. Thank you to all for coming out, and especially to the three students for such an amazing event. The third day of HELLO Village Week had a decidedly World Cup flavor. At lunch time, students watched a replay of the match between Argentina and Croatia while completing various missions in their HELLO Village Week booklets. After school was the “World Cup Wednesday” event, in which there was a presentation about the history of football, the impact the sport has had in England and the history of the World Cup. After the presentation, there was a fun quiz about the World Cup, in which six teams competed. Japan will face Poland later tonight to try to advance from the group stage. Here’s hoping for a good result! A talent show was held after school on the second day of HELLO Village Week. There were eight performances in total, ranging from beatboxing, a dance performance by an international competitor, an acapella performance by a trained musical talent, an exciting magic show and various other singing performances. All of the individual and group performances illustrated how truly talented the students of Hiyoshigaoka are, and gave us an opportunity to see performances which we perhaps otherwise would not.
